Is This A Studio Or A Sauna?

Sitting in a hot shipping container studio on South Terrace, sweating buckets, Lindsay, Lara, Dylan and Natalie shuffle nervously in front of their mics. They peer out the studio flywire at the bleached picnic bench and wilted succulent garden. Lee comments, “Don’t worry, I'll take better care of you than the garden.”

They Don't Know It Yet, But They're Actually Pretty Bloody Good At This Radio Stuff.

Lee starts tweaking knobs, rearranging mics, and introducing the crew to local radio, Freocast 101. The crew record their intro sweeps, and then Lee gives them a cheeky wink, “Live in ten secs.”

Ballroom Nostalgia & Impromptu Harmonica Jams

Lara kicks things off, her nervousness melting into a bright smile as she talks passionately about ballroom dancing—a hobby she’s embraced since she was twelve. She laughs and shakes her head, revealing just how pricey her passion can be: “The costumes are actually like $2,000 to $3,000!” She proudly announces her mates currently competing overseas in Paris and Hong Kong. Lindsay jumps in next, cracking jokes and sharing his infectious love for 80s rock, instantly capturing listeners as he casually picks up his harmonica and lets loose with an impromptu blues riff.

Ripping Off The Scabs

Dylan starts quietly, then dives deep, candidly sharing about growing up with cerebral palsy alongside his twin brother, raised by a single mum who juggled life intensely for a decade. “I always say I’ve got over 30 years of disability experience—and I'm 31, so that checks out,” he jokes softly. Dylan opens up about the critical turning point when support workers stepped in and helped him find direction after leaving school, leading him to his role at Humdrum: “They saw things needed to change and helped me find my path. It’s been huge.” Lee listens thoughtfully, nodding in deep recognition, and shares her own difficult journey, candidly acknowledging the challenge of shifting from nursing to radio. Natalie adds her story too, bravely exploring her path through sobriety and newfound sensory challenges. This isn't just a group chatting on the air—it’s about encouraging each other to step beyond what’s familiar, exploring new passions, and challenging one another to avoid getting stuck in the same old routines.

Freocast + Humdrum + City Of Fremantle

The reason this magic is even possible is thanks to generous support from the City of Fremantle. The grant has empowered Freocast, Fremantle Local Radio,  and Humdrum, the WA NDIS support work platform,  to amplify genuine local voices, sharing stories that range from heartfelt and hilarious to raw and revealing.

Get Behind Local Radio

Freocast is more than a station—it’s a lifeline for local musicians, artists, and everyday folks whose stories might never have been heard otherwise. Now they're gearing up for a move to new facilities down at the port, aiming to create an even bigger platform for Freo’s vibrant community.

But to make this vision a reality, Freocast needs our help. They've launched a GoFundMe campaign to support their move to the new community-focused facilities at the port. Every little bit counts—help Freocast build a space where local voices can thrive and connect even more deeply with Fremantle.
